Anne M. Wagner is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of California, Berkeley. Her pathbreaking 1997 book on Georgia O’Keeffe, Lee Krasner, and Eva Hesse, Three Artists (Three Women), focuses on the dilemmas that faced three key twentieth-century artists due to their gender. Gender politics also figure prominently in her most recent book, Mother Stone: The Vitality of Modern British Sculpture (Yale University Press, 2005). Here, she probes the work of British modernists Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Jacob Epstein to uncover a common preoccupation: maternity.
