Mia Liu is Assistant Professor in the Visual Studies Program at California College of the Arts. Previously, she was Assistant Professor in the Asian Studies Program at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She received her PhD in Art History from the University of Chicago in 2013. Her first book, The Literati Lens: Wenren Landscape in Chinese Cinema (1950–1979), is forthcoming in 2019 from the University of Hawai’i Press. She has published articles on Chinese photography, including “The Allegorical Landscape: Lang Jingshan’s Photography in Context” in Archives of Asian Art (2015), and “The ‘Emulative’ Portraits: Lang Jingshan’s Photography of Zhang Daqian” in Trans Asia Photography Review (2015). Her research interests focus on cinema, photography, optical devices, the history of visual apparatuses, and other issues of media in the history of Chinese art and visual culture.
