Disappear Here: Performing Through Documentation
Through an examination of Francis Alÿs’s The Loop (1997), Roman Ondák’s Measuring the Universe (2007), and an untitled work performed in 2002 by Trisha Donnelly, this project investigates the implications of the disappearance of the artist’s body in contemporary performance work, and links this removal of the body to the dematerialization of contemporary performance. Since performance is such an expansive, all-encompassing field, reviewing performance’s historical relationship to the dematerialization of art and distinguishing between the different ways contemporary artists work with performance is critical for understanding today’s complex practices and how some artists are continuing the project of dematerialization.
